Relena was the only one besides Zechs to survive the murder of the Royal Family of the Sanq Kingdom by the Alliance who refused to have a pacifist nation in it's midst. She grew up as the daughter of Vice Foreign Minister Darlian and his wife, whom both loved her as their real daughter. Relena lived quite happily as a child and her adopted parents had the assets to send her to some of the best schools on Earth. It was not until OZ attempted to assassinate Minister Darlian and he lay dying that Relena learned of her true heritage.

Relena took her old name and returned to the Sanq Kingdom in hopes that she could reestablish the lost peace. Though targeted by the rulers of the galaxy, she remains firm in her beliefs.
